Mystery of Flower Meaning: Rose

Rose, the most beloved flower of many, is often associated with romance, love and beauty. Its name is derived from the Latin word rosa which means pink or red. The rose flower symbolizes true love, beauty, and appreciation.

Its colors represent different meanings as well.

  • A red rose symbolizes true love, longing and desire
  • a white rose is associated with innocence, reverence and purity.

however, many others come in between and signify different feelings such as:

  • pink roses - appreciation and admiration
  • orange roses - longing and desire
  • yellow roses - joy, gladness and friendship
  • purple roses - embody enchantment
  • lavender roses - passionate love and admiration
  • burgundy roses - represent unconscious beauty.

The rose flower often comes with thorns which is a reminder that no one is perfect and even something beautiful can hurt. It is said that to break a rose in two symbolizes an impending break up or a rift in a relationship. When given a rose, the gesture is often that of love and appreciation for the recipient and is said to represent the eternal flame of love.

The rose has also been used to symbolize both positive and negative feelings in pop culture. A popular example of this is in Disney's Beauty and the Beast when the Beast gives Belle a rose inside a glass dome with a note saying ""Be Our Guest"". The gesture symbolizes his hope that they can be friends.

No matter the color or the meaning of a rose, it often serves as a reminder to enjoy the beauty of life and the people around us.
